U.S. 61 Junction Guide, Minnesota

This guide documents every trunk route that U.S. 61 has ever had a junction with in Minnesota (to my knowledge). Routes are organized first by type, and then by route number. Junctions do not include non-connecting over/under-passes.

The markers displayed for each route represent the eras that it had a junction with U.S. 61. See the chart (right) for types and date ranges (adapted from information displayed on Steve Reiner's Unofficial Minnesota Highways Page).

Notes

I-35 was constructed to replace U.S. 61 as the route between the Twin Cities and Duluth during the 1960's and 70's. As the interstate was completed, U.S. 61 was moved onto the freeway, and the old right-of-way was turned back to local control or transferred to other routes. U.S. 61 was concurrent with I-35 in various configurations between Wyoming and Duluth until the AASHTO approved Minnesota's request to retire the route north of the interchange (exit 135) at Wyoming in 1990.

The section of I-90 concurrent with U.S. 61 was constructed as a replacement for the old 2-lane highway through Dakota and Dresbach. It was originally orphaned from the rest of the interstate. The extension east across the Mississippi to Wisconsin wasn't completed until 1967. The connection west up the Nodine Hill towards Rochester was completed in 1972.

Site of the modern jct with County Road 22 in Wyoming. Site of the modern south junction with State Hwy 97 at Forest Lake. 1930-1954

Notes

U.S. 8 was one of the original U.S. routes first marked in Minnesota in September, 1926. U.S. 8 was routed onto what was originally State Route 46 between Taylor's Falls and Wyoming. The junction at Wyoming featured two "wye" ramps instead of a simple T intersection.

U.S. 8 was extended southwest to downtown Minneapolis in 1930 along what had previously been State Route 63, using a concurrency with U.S. 61 between Wyoming and the south side of Forest Lake. The south junction at Forest Lake was rebuilt between 1937 and 1940 into a divided highway. This junction was the predecessor to the modern 35W/35E split, i.e. the point where the main routes to Minneapolis and St. Paul branch off from each other. I-35 and 35W gradually replaced U.S. 8 as the main route into Minneapolis. A small segment of U.S. 8's old alignment west of U.S. 61 is now marked as part of State Highway 97 , providing a connection to I-35 from the south side of Forest Lake.

The modern interchange with U.S. 8, completed in 1969, is partial, only allowing access to eastbound U.S. 8, and from westbound U.S. 8. The other connections are made via an additional interchange one block to the west at 2nd Street. A connection between 2nd Street and U.S. 61 was constructed in 1979.

Intersection of Chestnut and Main Streets in La Crescent (site is on the modern highway). Wisconsin State Line at the Mississippi River between La Crescent and La Crosse (U.S. 16 continued east into Wisconsin). 1926-1941

Notes

U.S. 16 was one of the original U.S. routes first marked in Minnesota in September, 1926. It followed what had previously been State Highway 9 across Minnesota's southern tier counties. U.S. 16 was concurrent with U.S. 61 for a short distance across the Mississippi RIver bottoms between La Crescent and La Crosse.

U.S. 16 was retired in Minnesota and Wisconsin in about 1979 and replaced by state routes with the same number on both sides of the border (MN 16). The old junction with U.S. 16 in La Crescent was reconstructed and moved slightly to the northeast in 2007/08.

Location

Configurations

At the current interchange of I-35 with I-535 and U.S. 53 in Duluth. 1974-1990 U.S. 61 on I-35. U.S. 53 north to International Falls, south to Superior, Wisconsin.
Intersection of Superior Street and Garfield Avenue in Duluth. 1934-1972 U.S. 61 on Superior Street. U.S. 53 on Garfield Avenue (north to International Falls, south to Superior, Wisconsin.)

Notes

U.S. 53 was one of the original U.S. routes. However, it was not extended north into Minnesota across Duluth Harbor from Superior, Wisconsin until the May 4, 1934 renumbering. It replaced what had previously been State Highway 11 between Duluth and International Falls. The harbor crossing between Duluth and Superior was eventually upgraded into I-535 (U.S. 53 is still concurrent with the interstate).

There was no direct junction between U.S. 53 and U.S. 61 61 for a short time between 1972 and 1974. This occurred because the connections for U.S. 53 northbound from I-35 were not yet complete, and U.S. 53 therefore had to exit I-535 onto Garfield Avenue southeast of the interchange with I-35/U.S. 61.

Notes

State Highway 23 had a more complex relationship with U.S. 61 than any other trunk route in Minnesota, save possibly I-35.

Highway 23 was one of the original constitutional routes, first marked in 1921. It originally terminated at its junction with U.S. 61/Highway 1 at Mission Creek south of Hinckley In 1934, it was extended north as an alternate route to Duluth, concurrent with U.S. 61 from Hinckley to the Sandstone area, where it branched off to the northeast, finally terminating again at the intersection of Cody Street and Grand Avenue in West Duluth. This overall configuration lasted until 1961, when Highway 23 was extended northeast again through downtown Duluth as an alternate route to U.S. 61, replacing State Highway 281. The new northern terminus was at 60th Avenue East, just short of the Lester River. Highway 23's extension through downtown Duluth was finally retired in 1995. U.S. 61 and MN 23 were also concurrent through downtown Duluth between 1978 and 1989 after U.S. 61 was moved off of Superior Street onto MN 23 to make way for the construction of the final segment of I-35.

State Highway 210 was the original designation for the road added to the trunk highway system in 1949 between Carlton and Highway 23 through Jay Cooke State Park. It was originally seen as an eastern extension of U.S. 210, but with a state number. In about 1956, this decision was reversed, and Highway 210 was retired and replaced by a western extension of State Highway 39. State Highway 210 sprung back into existence in the Duluth area in 1970 when U.S. 210 was retired and replaced by a state route with the same number.

Multiple Concurrencies

The following guide covers the few locations in Minnesota where U.S. 61 has shared the road with more than one route. Concurrencies are ordered from north to south with route shields and dates The north and south end points with dates are also given.

U.S. 61 has shared the road with a maximum of four other routes within the state of Minnesota. This occurred at two locations: on Hudson Road in St. Paul, and on the road between La Crescent and the Wisconsin State Line. The large number of routes was due to the existence of both the U.S. route system and the old state route system between 1926 and 1934, before redundant routes on the old system were eliminated. These two locations were also the only places where U.S. 61 was concurrent with multiple U.S. routes.
