Looking north on Mankato Avenue at the Sarnia Street turnoff (note the marker for State Highway 43 on the left). U.S. 61 originally continued north on Mankato towards Broadway.

Looking north on Mankato, just south of 11th Street. Note the at-grade rail crossing ahead. The rail crossings were probably one of the primary reasons U.S. 61 was moved off of this alignment in 1929.

Looking north at Mankato and King (9th) Streets. Note the banner for the Polish Museum Apple Day.

At the intersection of Mankato and Broadway (6th Street). Northbound traffic would have turned left here.

At Vine Street.

At Laird Street.

At Center St, looking towards Main.

At Main Street/State Highway 43. Note the sign for "downtown" Winona.

At Harriet St.

The curve marking the transition from the old street grid aligned with the river to the street grid on the west side aligned with cardinal directions. The street ahead is McBride.

At Cummings Street, entering the St. Mary's University - St. Teresa campus.

Looking west at Broadway and Villa, the original junction of U.S. 61 and U.S. 14 from 1926 until 1929. Motorists could take a left here to head for St. Charles and Rochester , or continue ahead towards Wabasha. This was also where the brick pavement on Broadway ended, and the concrete highway constructed in 1926 between Winona and the Wabasha County line began.

Looking west towards Junction Street.

Looking east just before Junction Street. The surviving piece of the original concrete highway is visible on the right.

A view of the remains of Broadway's old connection to Junction Street, looking northwest. This stretch of surviving concrete highway was only in use by U.S. 61 for three short years before the second alignment on Junction Street was constructed in 1929.
