Route Development Timeline:
September 1926: US Highway 55, one of the original US routes, is routed onto State Highway 50 through Dakota County. The road from the Lyndale Avenue bridge at the Minnesota River to the junction with Dodd Road had been completed and paved in 1921/1922 as a joint project between Hennepin and Dakota Counties. The pavement is asphalt on concrete, 18 feet wide. The road from the junction with Dodd Road through Lakeville to Farmington (Elm and 1st Streets) had been completed and paved in 1925 with concrete, 18 feet wide. Elm Street between 1st and 3rd Streets had been paved with ashaplt on concrete in 1920. The duplex with Highway 1 and US 65 on 3rd and Ash Streets through Farmington had been paved in 1922. The rest of the route from Farmington through Hampton to Cannon Falls still uses existing gravel and dirt roads.
1927: The road from Hampton to Cannon Falls is regraded and gravel surfaced. The new grade reduces the distance to Cannon Falls by bypassing the old route on Fischer Ave. and 280th Street (Co Rd 86).
1928: The road from Farmington to Cannon Falls is paved in concrete, 20 feet wide. US 55's route through Dakota County is now fully paved.
May 4, 1934: US Highway 55 is retired in the route consolidation of 1934. It is replaced by US 52 from Cannon Falls through Hampton to what is now the junction of Highway 50 with County Road 81. The portion between Hampton and the old south junction with US 65 at Farmington (the modern junction of Hwys 3 and 50) remains as State Highway 50. US 65 replaces US 55 through Farmington to Minneapolis (US 218 also uses US 55's old route through Farmington on Ash and 3rd Streets).
Post Retirement Route Developments (Non-Construction):
1956: US 65 from Farmington to Lakeville is replaced by State Highway 50 after US 65 is moved to a new more westerly alignment between Owatonna and Lakeville. The rest of US 55's old route to Minneapolis remains US 65.
1960: US 65 is replaced by I-35W north of Highway 13.
1966: US 65 is replaced by I-35 and I-35W through Lakeville and Farmington (US 65 remains duplexed with I-35/I-35W until 1980).
1993: The portion of State Highway 50 between Farmington and I-35 at Lakeville is turned back to Dakota County as County Road 50.
