Route Development Timeline:

May 4, 1934: State Highway 88 becomes the replacement designation for what had previously been the northern section of State Highway 1's route through Dakota County. Highway 88's route starts on the south at the junction with South Robert Trail (Highway 218), and then continues north to St. Paul. The road north from the junction with Highway 218 to what is now Opperman Drive in Eagan had been graded in 1921 and paved with 18 feet of concrete in 1922. The section north of Opperman Drive in Eagan to the Ramsey County line had been completed in 1920 as (County) State Road 1 and paved with asphalt on a concrete base. Highway 55 temporarily duplexes with Highway 88 from the north junction near Lone Oak Road to Rich Valley Bouldvard until Courthouse Boulevard can be completed in 1936.

1936: Highway 55 is moved off its temporary duplex with Highway 88 from what is now the south junction of Highway 55 with Highway 149 to Rich Valley Boulevard after a new road, Concord Boulevard, is completed. Highway 55 and 88 continue to duplex for a short stretch between the north and south junctions on the old paved road completed in 1920.

1943: The junction/duplex with State Highway 55 is reconstructed, expanding the road to a four-lane divided highway and seperating north and south-bound traffic. The old asphalt road through the junction, constructed in 1920, becomes the northbound lane, and is left mostly as-is. A new southbound roadway is constructed and paved with concrete. Several at-grade connecting ramps and drives are constructed to allow all connections. The west end of Courthouse Boulevard at the south junction, constructed in 1936, is fully reconstructed to facilitate the four lane expansion.

1950: State Highway 88 is retired and replaced on its route through Dakota County by a southern extension of State Highway 49.
