Route Development Timeline:
1959: State Highway 316 is authorized as a shorter route between Hastings and Red Wing, using Red Wing Boulevard and Polk Avenue. The route had already been paved as a county road.
1983: The junction with US 61 is revised, moving it slightly south. The road at the junction is also widened.
