Route Development Timeline:
1980: Highway 149 becomes the new designation for what had previously been State Highway 49. The road between the junction with Highway 3 and the south junction with Highway 55 had last been fully reconstructed in 1951. Another project in 1976 added paved shoulders and turn lanes. The divided junction/duplex with State Highway 55 in Eagan had been constructed in 1943 (the northbound lane is actually the original road completed in 1920 as State Road 1). The south junction with Highway 55 was modified in 1975. The route on Dodd Road north of the junction with Highway 55 had last been repaved in 1970 as far north as Delaware Avenue (22 feet of pavement on top of the original grade from 1920). The stretch between Delaware and Smith Avenues had been widened to 40 feet of bituminous pavement in 1963. Smith Avenue between Dodd Road and Annapolis Street had last been repaved in 1952 with a bituminous seal coat.
1982: The junction/duplex with Highway 55 is fully reconstructed into a four lane divided highway to replace the old divided junction contructed in 1943, which still incorporated parts of the original grades from the 1920's. Both intersections with Highway 55 are updated to simple intersections with stoplights, eliminating the old connecting ramps. All of the old roads through the reconstructed stretch are destroyed by the project.
1985: Full reconstruction and upgrade to four lanes from the north junction with State Highway 55 to just north of Mendota Heights Road. This construction is undertaken as part of the construction of an interchange with I-494, which is also completed between 35E and Highway 149. The upgraded stretch of Highway 149 serves as the only direct connection between the Highway 55/149 corridor and the newly completed interstate network in northern Dakota County. The new road features concrete center islands, traffic control systems, and turn lanes.
1991/92: The section from just north of Baffin Trail to just north of Yankee Doodle Road is widened and moderized with left and right turn lanes in conjunction with the construction of the massive new West Publishing headquarters, located at Highway 149 and Opperman Drive.
1996: The south junction with Highway 55 in Eagan is improved, with dual left-turn lanes added for traffic on northbound Highway 149, plus new medians, etc.
2007: Upgrade into a four lane divided roadway, new curb and gutter, new traffic signal, dedicated turn lanes and a regional trail. In Eagan, beginning at Hwy 55 to Albano Trail in Inver Grove Heights.
